Final Note from 14 July 2021: LECTURE AND EXAMINATIONS ARE COMPLETED.

The grades of all participants of the final examination will be transmitted electronically to the examination office.
The certificates on paper will also be sent to the examination office.

Update from 15 June 2021: SIGNED EXAM REGISTRATION DOCUMENTS MUST BE RETURNED UNTIL 22 June

All students registered for the final exam have to fill out, sign, and return the documents for the binding exam registration until 22 June. Students who don't return the properly filled and signed form until this date cannot take part in the examination.

All students registered for the final exam are very strongly encouraged to attend the lecture video conferences on 2 June and the following weeks, since the details of the final exam will be discussed in this meeting.
Students who don't attend will probably miss important information.

All students who are interested in participating in the final exam for this lecture (planned for the week of 14 July) have to register until 28 May 2021 via the web-form link provided on the lecture-material webpage. Please note that this pre-registration is mandatory.

Organization of the Lecture

Registration for this lecture in the LSF is strictly required. Please register until Monday, 12 April 2021, noon ! After this date, registration will be closed.

On Monday, 12 April 2021, all registered students will receive the login-information for the lecture materials website by e-mail to the LMU campus e-mail addresses as stored in the LSF. Please note that, due to legal reasons, this login information is only for your personal use; it is not allowed to communicate the login information or forward any of the documents on that protected website to anybody else!

The lecture will follow the normal lecture schedule and treat one chapter each week, starting on 14 April 2021. It consists of the following elements:

a) This lecture website is the central point for organizational information. It will be continuously updated. All announcements and information about any changes will be described in blue text in the top block of the page.

b) The (password-protected) lecture material website contains the PDFs of the lecture slides and the tutorial problem sets for each week.
The login information will be provided to registered students only and must not be forwarded to anybody else.

c) There are screencast videos for each lecture chapter, in which I will discuss the lecture slides in a way similar as would be done in the lecture hall. Each lecture is split into 3 videos.
These screencast videos are posted at the LMUCast website and can be accessed via the link posted on the lecture material website by the registered students with their LMU campus account. It is strongly recommended that each week you watch the videos for the chapter of the corresponding week before the weekly video-conference.

d) There will be a Zoom video-conference each week on Wednesday at 09:15 for the lecture. First video-conference: 14 April 2021.
The link to the conference and the required password is posted on the lecture material website. In these weekly video-conferences, I will first briefly highlight the most important aspects of the current week's lecture, and then students are encouraged to ask questions. Participation in these video-conferences is, of course, voluntary, but very strongly recommended! We will also discuss the regulations and procedures for the final exam in these video-conferences.

e) The first tutorial problem set will be issued on 14 April 2021. The tutorials will also be held as a video-conference each week, starting on Wednesday, 21 April at 12:15. The problem sets for each week are available on the lecture materials website. In the week after the issue date of a problem set, the solutions to these problems will be discussed with the tutor.
The link to the tutorial video-conference and the required password will be posted on the lecture material website.
Participation in the tutorial video-conferences is strongly recommended, since the problems treated in the tutorials are an essential part of the module and important for the final examination.

Important Note: Participation in the final examination will be only possible for students who are registered for the lecture and are officially admitted for the exam. The rules for the exam admission procedure will be discussed in the video-conferences for the lecture.


Beschreibung der Vorlesung:

Diese Vorlesung gibt zunächst einen Überblick über die Physik und Chemie des Interstellaren Mediums, behandelt dann die Struktur, Stabilität und den Kollaps von Molekülwolken, sowie die Entstehung und Vorhauptreihenentwicklung von Sternen und die Entwicklung der zirkumstellaren Materie um junge Sterne. Neben der Beschreibung der grundlegenden Mechanismen der Planetenentstehung liegt ein weiterer Schwerpunkt der Vorlesung auf der frühen Entwicklung von terrestrischen Planeten, insbesondere ihrer Atmosphären und dem Klima, sowie dem Konzept der Habitabilität von Planeten. Im letzten Teil der Vorlesung werden schließlich noch Sternentstehung in Sternhaufen sowie Feedbackprozesse durch massereiche Sterne behandelt.


Description of the Lecture:

This lecture will first give an overview on the physics and chemistry of the interstellar medium and the formation and early evolution of stars and stellar systems. It will also discuss the early evolution of terrestrial planets, their atmospheres and climate, and the concept of habitability of planets.
This lecture is suitable for all master students in physics or astrophysics.
